Life has to be lived for the betterment of yourself. if you just do things for betterment of others and won't do things for the betterment of you then what's the use serving others.
Be a little selfish for your own betterment.
Don't serve people with hurting your self-respect. Don't become egoistic which demands for over-respect.
There is a lesson in Radhakrishna episode.
This is in Hindi-
Dusro ke saamne jhukna seekihye, jhukne mein koi burayi nahin hai.
Lekin kya baar baar jhukna zaroori hai? nahin.
Baar baar kisi ki saheytha leni chahiye? Nahin.
Which means-
Learn to bow in front of people when you need to. There is nothing wrong in bowing when you need to.
But don't go on bowing every time.
Don't ask for help every time from one person.
When you learn to bow in front of others you will become less arrogant and you will respect others and you will earn your respect someday.
But don't bow in front of one person every time.
Becoming a spiritual person will earn you respect or at least self-respect.
Don't become depressed and sad if someone doesn't respect you , earn your respect and read the shastras, you will accept yourself automatically and move ahead and earn respect from others someday.
Also, Gita contains the three modes of nature - goodness, passion and ignorance. This will also help you in earning respect of others.
So, will you read the shastras and earn your respect.
The choice is yours.
No better way than to start your New Year with the shastras.
Goodbye and God Bless!
